Man in Five Points shootout with Denver police officers dead of apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound

A suspect involved in a Wednesday night shootout with Denver police officers in Five Points has died and investigators believe the gunshot wound was self-inflicted, according to the Denver Police Department.

Police are investigating the shootout between Denver police officers and the suspect. It happened around 11:30 p.m., in the area of 26th and Curtis streets.

Officers responded to a call of someone who was trying to open doors in the neighborhood, according to Denver7.

An officer saw someone who looked like the suspect. The individual began to flee, and then turned and fired at the officer. The officer shot back at the individual. The pursuit ended around 26th Street and Curtis Street because the individual was wounded, Denver7 said. The individual was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The handgun that the person used was recovered at the scene.

The suspect’s injuries are unknown, according to police. No officers were injured in the incident.

The Denver Police Department has had prior contact with the individual, Denver7 said.

Streets in the area are still closed Thursday morning due to the investigation, according to the Denver Police Department.
