A 27-year-old Denver man was walking on the northbound lanes of Interstate 25 near Lone Tree late Monday night when he was struck by multiple vehicles and killed, a Colorado trooper said.

The name of the victim has not been released.

The highway was closed for about four hours while the crash was investigated and the body was removed. The man was declared dead at the scene, said Trooper Josh Lewis of the Colorado State Patrol.

An emergency call was originally made at 10 p.m. by a witness who said non-human debris was on the interstate, Lewis said.

“As we responded we found it was human,” he said. “We don’t know why he was walking on the highway.”

An investigation revealed that the man was walking on the highway when he was struck by a 2002 Toyota Corolla. Two other vehicles also ran over the man, Lewis said.

The highway was reopened at about 2 a.m. Tuesday, he said.
