After an uncharacteristically average defensive season in 2018, the Broncos enter 2019 with a beefed-up defense. And one publication took plenty of notice.

USA Today’s Steven Ruiz , based on a combination of coverage, pass rush, coaching and run defense. Only the New England Patriots were rated higher.

Ruiz writes: “The Broncos defense isn’t nearly as deep as the one (Vic) Fangio left behind in Chicago, but he has more than enough to work with to build another top-five unit in Denver. Pass rushers Von Miller and Bradley Chubb are the stars. They should have no trouble getting to the quarterback. The secondary isn’t as talented as it once was but Fangio is a master of coverages and should get the best out of this group led by Chris Harris Jr. and free agent slot corner Bryce Callahan.”

Will Denver’s offense be strong enough to take advantage of this? The Broncos may be in for a long season if they can’t find the end zone on Monday — Ruiz rates the Raiders’ defense No. 31 of 32 teams.
