Deputies in Douglas County responded to a Highlands Ranch neighborhood after a shooting was reported on Tuesday afternoon. A suspect was believed to be inside a victim’s home, the sheriff’s office said.

As of about 6:15 p.m. the scene had been secured and there was no ongoing threat to the community, authorities said in a tweet.

The situation began at about 3:30 p.m. near the 9800 block of Castle Ridge Circle, the sheriff’s office said. Neighboring residents have been advised to shelter in place and a nearby school was placed on lockout as a safety precaution. Classes at the school were already out for the day.

According to the sheriff’s office, a man approached another man and multiple shots were fired. The pair knew each other, authorities said.

The victim ran from the scene and the suspect was believed to be inside the victim’s home, the sheriff’s office said. No injuries were reported.

Deputies surrounded the home and people were asked to avoid the area. Residents displaced by the incident were asked to go to Ranch View Middle School, 1731 W. Wildcat Reserve Pkwy., for assistance and relief, the sheriff’s office said.

A SWAT team member set off a stun grenade into the residence in an attempt to flush out a suspect. Just after 6 p.m. the sheriff’s office said the residence has been cleared and that there is not threat to the community.
