Rockies fans are just a frustrated as the players, coaches and front-office members when it comes to the disappointing season the team has had in 2019.
There are some who think the Rockies should fire general manager Jeff Bridich or long for the days of the Monforts to sell the club. Well, I hate to break it to those folks, but they’re not going to sell the team, and Bridich isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
Overall, Dick Monfort has been a good owner of the Rockies. He wants to win just as badly as anyone else does, and the spending shows it as the Rox ranked 12th in MLB entering this season. Rockies beat writer Patrick Saunders had a good breakdown on how Monfort deserves credit for running a first-class organization.
Even though some of Bridich’s signings, like Bryan Shaw and Ian Desmond, have been questionable, he has done a nice job with signing players and was at the helm when Colorado went to the postseason in back-to-back years for the first time in franchise history.
It is still time for some change at 20th and Blake heading into 2020, and a man Monfort might need to call is Dave Dombrowski. No not to replace Bridich, but to become the new team president.
Monfort has done a nice job since the passing of former team president Keli McGregor in 2010, but the time is now for an outside voice to join the Rockies family.
Dombrowski is the former President of Baseball Operations for the Boston Red Sox and was previously the GM of the Montreal Expos, Florida Marlins and Detroit Tigers. He has been a part of rebuilds and has built winning teams in three cities, two of which have won World Series titles: the Marlins in 1997 and most recently the Red Sox in 2018.
A new team president like Dombrowski might have been the voice needed to keep DJ LeMahieu in purple pinstripes.
The Rockies faithful are ready for a National League West title and a deep Rocktober run.
If Monfort and Co. want to get back to the postseason sooner than later, calling Dombrowski might be the winning ticket back to the fall classic.
