Looks like the fourth time was not the charm for Vic Fangio.
The Broncos’ first-year head coach is still looking for his first win after the Broncos lost to the Jaguars, 26-24, off of a time-expiring field goal on Sunday. But on the bright side, they recorded their first (second, third, fourth and fifth) sacks of the year.
But there’s hope for you optimists out there: Since 1978, 120 NFL teams have started their seasons with an 0-4 record. Only one made it to the playoffs: the 1992 San Diego Chargers. If Denver wants any shot at being the second, it has to beat the Chargers next week in Los Angeles.
Here’s what you may have missed from the game:
- “Same (bleep), different week.” That’s how Denver nose tackle Shelby Harris described the scene after Jaguars’ Josh Lambo hit a 33-yard field goal to clinch Jacksonville’s win. Ryan O’Halloran breaks down what happened on Sunday in his Broncos analysis.
- So, how do the Broncos fix this? Columnist Mark Kiszla has an idea: “Fire ’em all. Vic Fangio, Joe Flacco and even John Elway on the hot seat.“
- “When you’re 0-4, you’ve got to re-evaluate everybody,” Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton said. Despite a two-touchdown afternoon against Jacksonville, the Broncos’ second-year wideout was in no mood to celebrate, Sean Keeler writes.
- The Broncos struggle to explain their porous run defense in loss vs. Jaguars: “We got whipped.”
- The Broncos sacked rookie Gardner Minshew five times, including twice by Von Miller, who now has 100 in his career.
- This is just the fourth time in Denver’s 60-year history that the team has started 0-4. Ryan O’Halloran grades the coaching as “historically inept” in this week’s Broncos Status Report.
- The good? De’Vante Bausby and punter Colby Wadman. The bad? Where do you want to start? Matt Schubert breaks it down in his up-down drill.
- There were some nice highlights, from rookie tight end Noah Fant’s first career touchdown to Courtland Sutton’s first TD catch in Denver.

Rock Bottom: Disappointing season leaves Nolan Arenado wondering what direction Rockies are headed
After qualifying for the playoffs in back-to-back seasons for the first time in franchise history, the Rockies, hamstrung by historically bad pitching, bedeviled by an inconsistent offense, and hamstrung by injuries in the second half, crashlanded. They entered the final weekend with 91 losses, sitting at the bottom of the National League West cellar and facing far more questions than answers about how to dig out, Kyle Newman writes. Avalanche D-partners Sam Girard and Cale Makar: Catch them if you can
Elite has changed shape since then, and the development curve is much shorter. Elite doesn’t necessarily mean you’re 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds like Johnson, or that you have to wait until after your 21st birthday.
The Avs are rich in this new defensive paradigm, and Johnson has a front-row seat to it. He’s now a second-pairing defenseman, playing behind the Avs’ top pair of left-shooting Sam Girard, 21, and right-shooting Cale Makar, 20, Mike Chambers reports. Read more…
