was helped off the field in the second quarter Thursday night against the Broncos after the quarterback converted a fourth-and-1 with a quarterback sneak. Soon after he was ruled out for the rest of the game with a right knee injury.

The Chiefs led 10-6 with 9:40 to play in the first half at the time and were deep inside Denver territory. The trainers worked on Mahomes’ right knee as he lay on the turf in pain, appearing to pop his knee cap back into place. Several of Mahomes’ teammates displayed animated, concerned reactions upon seeing the reigning NFL MVP go down.

Mahomes had been nursing an ankle injury early on this season but hadn’t shown any mobility limitations up to being injured on the sneak. He finished the game 10-of-11 for 76 yards passing and a touchdown, with a 125.8 rating.

Kansas City backup came on in place of Mahomes. Moore, signed by Kansas City in August, had previously attempted one pass this season. The Chiefs got a field goal on the drive to extend their lead to 13-6, and gained further momentum following Mahomes’ exit with a scoop-and-score a few minutes later off a Joe Flacco fumble.

After being helped off, Mahomes walked on his own to the X-ray room at Mile High. He was ruled out a few minutes later.
