A 60-year-old man was found guilty of first-degree murder for killing his wife of 37 years who had been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, according to the Jefferson District Attorney’s Office.
A jury convicted Bruce Bagwell of fatally shooting Theresa Bagwell, 58, after deliberating for an hour Monday, the DA’s office said in a news release.
Theresa Bagwell’s father reported the killing to Lakewood police on Feb. 6, saying he called to speak to his daughter and Bruce Bagwell told him he had shot her to death, according to the release. Police found Theresa Bagwell dead in her wheelchair, sitting naked. Her husband shot her with a shotgun twice in the back of the head and one at close range into her chest, testimony revealed.
Theresa Bagwell was terminally ill with brain cancer and was receiving in-home hospice care, according to the DA’s office. The hospice provider was with Bagwell earlier that day.
Bruce Bagwell is being held without bond at the Jefferson County jail and is scheduled to be sentenced at 2 p.m. Nov. 13.
