
A look at head-coaching changes throughout the NFL as teams begin to retool for 2020. (This will be updated):
FIRED
Jay Gruden, Redskins: Gruden was fired Oct. 7 after Washington began the season 0-5. In a little more than five seasons, he finished with a 35-49-1 record. Assistant head coach Bill Callahan finished the year as the team’s interim head coach.
Ron Rivera, Panthers: Rivera was fired Dec. 3, following Carolina’s Week 13 loss which forced the team to its third non-playoff season in four years. He finished with a 76-63-1 record and took the team to the Super Bowl in 2015. Secondary coach Perry Fewell finished the year as interim head coach.
Freddie Kitchens, Browns: Kitchens was fired Dec. 29, hours after Cleveland’s loss to the 2-14 Cincinnati Bengals. He was there for just one season, finishing with a 6-10 record.
Pat Shurmur, Giants: New York fired Shurmur on Dec. 30 after the Giants finished with a 4-12 record and missed the playoffs for the seventh time in eight years. Shurmur coached for two seasons and finished with a 9-23 record.
NOT RE-SIGNED
Jason Garrett, Cowboys: Dallas on Jan. 5 announced it didn’t re-sign Garrett after he finished 8-8 and missed the playoffs. Garrett spent 9½ seasons with the Cowboys, finishing with a record of 87-70, playoffs included.
HIRED
Ron Rivera, Redskins: Washington hired Rivera on Jan. 1. The former Panthers head coach spent nine seasons in Carolina.
Mike McCarthy, Cowboys: Dallas agreed on a deal with McCarthy, according to an Associated Press source on Jan. 6. McCarthy, 56, previously spent 13 seasons with the Green Bay Packers, making nine postseason trips and winning a Super Bowl.
Matt Rhule, Panthers: Carolina on Jan. 7 agreed to a deal with Rhule. The 44-year-old spent the last three seasons at Baylor, where he led the Bears to an 11-3 record and a Sugar Bowl bid last season. In seven years with Baylor and Temple, he compiled a 47-43 record.
Joe Judge, Giants: New York on Jan. 8 hired Judge. He spent the last eight seasons as an assistant with the Patriots, winning three Super Bowls in the process. He has never been a head coach at either the college or NFL level.
