Cherry Creek Shopping Center customers will have to buy themselves a parking spot after the mall announced it would do away with its first-hour free policy.

Starting Jan. 21, there will be a $2 fee for the first two hours of parking, $2 for each additional hour and a maximum of $16, Cherry Creek mall General Manager Jeramy Burkinshaw said.

“Our area has experienced incredible growth and parking is scarce,” Burkinshaw said. “We had people use the first free hour of parking and then go somewhere else. This change will serve our customers.”

BusinessDen the change.

Under the previous policy, it would cost $3 for each additional hour of parking, Burkinshaw said. Though the change will result in a higher up-front cost it will save customers more in the long run because the average person spends more than one hour in the mall, Burkinshaw said.

The change comes after Cherry Creek Mall announced it would start charging parking fees in 2017, a move that resulted in criticism from the community.
