Eastbound and westbound lanes of Interstate 70 were closed Saturday afternoon outside Glenwood Springs because of a shooting involving a law-enforcement officer, the Colorado Department of Transportation and the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office announced.
The closure, announced at 2:43 p.m., affects the highway between Exit 105 in New Castle and Exit 109 in Canyon Creek. Traffic is being diverted to U.S. 6 and U.S. 24 immediately north of Interstate 70. The public is asked to stay clear of this area if possible.
The 9th Judicial District has activated a critical incident team to investigate.
Authorities did not immediately say what prompted the shooting, and CDOT said there is no estimated time for reopening I-70.
