The Northern Colorado football team added a little more McCaffrey family flavor to its coaching staff.

Max McCaffrey, eldest son of recently named Bears head coach and former Bronco Ed McCaffrey, was welcomed to the coaching staff in a tweet sent out by the team’s Twitter account Friday afternoon.

The Valor Christian grad was a wide receiver at Duke before stints with five different franchises in the NFL. He was drafted in the eighth round of the XFL draft last October by the DC Defenders, but it’s unclear whether or not he still intends to play.

Ed McCaffrey was named UNC coach in December following two seasons as Valor Christian’s head coach — a run that included one state title. He replaces Earnest Collins Jr., who was let go after posing a 28-72 record in nine seasons in Greeley.

“I’m so happy to be here and I want to bring championship football back to the University of Northern Colorado,” Ed McCaffrey said at his introductory news conference.
