The Colorado Buffaloes are looking for their third head football coach in three years after Mel Tucker resigned from the program Wednesday to helm the Michigan State Spartans.
So, who’s next to lead the Buffs? Our own Matt Schubert and Sean Keeler compiled a list of potential candidates to be CU’s next head coach.
But with those candidates come a bevy of names that up in conversation, but probably shouldn’t. Here’s a look at some of those:
Dave Logan
It seems like every time the position in Boulder opens up, the former CU multi-sport star and prolific high school football coach’s name comes up among the fan base. True, he has a proven record coaching on the prep level, winning eight state titles with four different teams. But he doesn’t have any collegiate experience and, at 66, he would be among the 10 oldest head coaches in Division I this upcoming year.
Former players not named Eric Bieniemy or Darrin Chiaverini
OK, with the exceptions of Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, who’s been in the rumor mill for a number of NFL and collegiate gigs this year, and CU wide receivers coach Darrin Chiaverini, who was named the interim head coach, former players should not be named head coach simply for nostalgia sake. Kordell Stewart, Chad Brown, Mason Crosby and Michael Westbrook certainly had star power in their heyday, but their lack of experience wouldn’t fit the bill for a head coach (see: Embree, Jon).
Also, Vance Joseph. The bad taste among Broncos fans after his lackluster tenure in Denver would undoubtedly put him in a rough place in Boulder.
Other Colorado D-1 coaches
This upcoming season, there will be three Division I coaches entering their first year with their teams in Colorado. In addition to the Buffs, Ed McCaffrey will lead the Northern Colorado Bears while the Steve Addazio era will kick off with Colorado State. Troy Calhoun would be an intriguing candidate after coming off his best season (11-2) with the Falcons, but he has been a fixture at Air Force since taking over for Fisher DeBerry in 2007.
Former CU head coaches
The days of Bill McCartney, Rick Neuheisel, Gary Barnett, Dan Hawkins, Jon Embree and Mike MacIntyre are long gone from the program.
Urban Meyer
Stop. Just stop. CU isn’t hiring Urban Meyer.
