A two-vehicle, fatal crash on Interstate 25 during the Wednesday afternoon rush hour in Douglas County shut down northbound lanes of the interstate for several hours.

The crash happened about 4:50 p.m. in the Greenland area on a stretch of highway between Monument Hill and Larkspur, according to the State Patrol.

Northbound lanes were closed as of 5 p.m., and southbound lanes were backed up in heavy, slow traffic, the state patrol said. Drivers were urged to avoid the area if possible. The northbound lanes reopened at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Weather in the area, at the time of the crash, was a mix of light snow, fog and mist with a temperature of 20 degrees and humidity at 85 percent, according to the National Weather Service.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Several metro-area cities and counties, including Parker and Douglas County, went on accident alert Wednesday afternoon as snow fell along the Front Range. Snow plows were out in traffic, and authorities urged drivers to slow down and be careful.

In Denver, police said there were 26 reports of traffic crashes between 4 and 6 p.m. Wednesday.
