A construction worker injured Thursday after a 40-foot fall down an elevator shaft under construction was hoisted to safety by firefighters and a crane operator.

The work-related accident happened at a construction site near West Quincy Avenue and South Pierce Way, according to West Metro Fire and Rescue.

Two firefighters, using on-site construction ladders, climbed down the shaft to reach the injured worker and stabilize him, according to West Metro. Rescuers then used a rope system, an on site construction crane and an emergency rescue litter to safely hoist the injured worker out of the shaft.

Eighteen firefighters, including members of the technical rescue crew, took part in the effort.

The worker was taken to a local hospital with injuries that are not life threatening, the fire department said.
