A Denver jury on Monday convicted a man of murder despite his arguments that he shot and killed Jacy Kadison-Marshall in self defense.

After eight hours of deliberation, a jury convicted Michael Pikes, 33, in the killing, the Denver District Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday.

Pikes called 911 on Dec. 1, 2018, to report that he had shot 37-year-old Kadison-Marshall in self defense in a Park Hill apartment building, near Colfax Avenue. He then hung up on the dispatcher and fired more rounds at Kadison-Marshall, according to the prosecutors office.

When police arrived, Pikes surrendered himself.

“Thank you for coming, I got him, I shot him and he is right there in my apartment room,” Pikes told the officers, according to his arrest affidavit.

Pikes later told detectives that he shot Kadison-Marshall because he thought he was armed.

Pikes will be sentenced on May 1.
