Denver Public Schools will excuse absences of children kept home from school as the highly contagious new coronavirus continues to spread, the district announced Thursday.

“We understand that families know whatap best for their children, and we will honor decisions to keep children home from school during this time,” said Will Jones, Denver Public Schools spokesman. “Parents should contact their child’s school if they will be keeping them home.”

On Thursday, Denver’s Edison Elementary School was closed for the day after a parent tested positive for COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the new coronavirus, and Cory Elementary was closed for a second day for the same reason.

The Denver district said the schools would be thoroughly disinfected during the closures.

On Wednesday, Gov. Jared Polis recommended schools close for 72 hours for disinfection if a student or staff member test positive for the new coronavirus. Multiple cases of COVID-19 could require a school closing for 14 days, he added.
