The Mesa County Coroner’s Office identified the man killed Tuesday in a police shooting as 51-year-old Steven Alire of Grand Junction.

The cause of death was gunshot wounds in the torso, and the manner of death is homicide, the coroner’s office said. Toxicology tests are pending.

Grand Junction police shot and killed Alire, who they said appeared to be holding a gun, after he emerged from an house they had surrounded. Alire had gone inside after someone called police because he brandished a gun and knife in front of young people playing basketball at Orchard Mesa Middle School.
