

The second round of The Denver Post’s Greatest Athlete in Colorado History championship bracket came to a close at noon on Wednesday. We totaled about 30,000 votes. Here’s a look at the results and a preview of the third round:
Under the Sun quadrant
Second-round results:
- 1. Nolan Arenado (80.75%) d. 8. Troy Tulowitzki (19.25%)
Arenado is the only current professional athlete remaining in the tournament. - 2. Larry Walker (88.53%) d. 7. Trevor Story (11.47%)
- 3. Goose Gossage (51.02%) d. 6. Andres Galarraga (48.98%)
For the second straight matchup for the Big Cat, voting came down to the wire. Only 37 votes separated Galarraga and Hall of Fame reliever Gossage. - 5. Todd Helton (73.46%) d. 4. Roy Halladay (26.54%)
Third round preview: A pair of Hall of Famers face off while two others who could very well be bound for Cooperstown battle. The bout to watch will be between Helton and Arenado. Who’s the true face of the Rockies?

- 1. John Elway (83.02%) d. 8. Von Miller (16.98%)

- 11. Shannon Sharpe (51.91%) d. 3. Champ Bailey (48.09%)
The battle between the two Hall of Famers was the second closest in the tournament. Just 73 votes separated them. Sharpe is the lowest seed remaining. - 4. Floyd Little (61.56%) d. 12. Christian McCaffrey (38.44%)
Third-round preview: Only Broncos remain in this quadrant, three of which were key members of the Super Bowl XXXII and XXXIII-winning teams. Key matchup — Terrell Davis vs. Shannon Sharpe.

Water and Ice quadrant
Second round results:

This was the most lop-sided matchup in the second round of the tournament. - 3. Joe Sakic (63.56%) d. 6. Mikaela Shiffrin (36.44%)
- 5. Lindsey Vonn (64.75%) d. 4. Missy Franklin (35.25%)
Vonn is the only female athlete to advance to the Sweet 16 of the tournament.
Third-round preview: It’s going to be a slugfest when former legendary Avalanche teammates Roy and Sakic take each other on. Meanwhile, Peter the Great will go against the most-decorated woman in World Cup skiing history.
