The Sweet 16 round of The Denver Postap Greatest Athlete in Colorado History championship bracket came to a close Wednesday, leaving a salty taste in some stars’ mouths as the field drops to just eight. Here’s a look at the results and a preview of the third round:

Under the Sun quadrant

Third-round results:

  • 1. Nolan Arenado (53.28%) d. 5. Todd Helton (46.72%)
    The closest matchup in the tournament, Arenado narrowly beat out Helton to punch his ticket to the next round.
  • 2. Larry Walker (76.44%) d. 3. Goose Gossage (23.56%)

Fourth-round preview:

  • 1. Nolan Arenado vs. 2. Larry Walker
    It’s an all-Rockies affair in the quadrant final as the best third baseman in the game faces Colorado’s first-ever Hall of Famer.

Gridiron quadrant

Third-round results:

  • 1. John Elway (87.45%) d. 4. Floyd Little (12.55%)
  • 7. Terrell Davis (66.79%) d. 11. Shannon Sharpe (33.21%)

Fourth-round preview:

  • 1. John Elway vs. 7. Terrell Davis
    They stood played next to each other, leading the Broncos to championship runs with Super Bowls XXXII and XXXIII, but now we’ll see who has captured more Colorado’s hearts.

Water and Ice quadrant

Third-round results:

  • 1. Peter Forsberg (59.91%) d. Lindsey Vonn (40.09%)
    Vonn, the sole female athlete remaining in the tournament, had a strong effort but fell short of toppling Forsberg.
  • 3. Joe Sakic (55.91%) d. 2. Patrick Roy (44.09%)

Fourth-round preview:

  • 1. Peter Forsberg vs. 3. Joe Sakic
    A battle between the top two centers of the Avs’ golden age, it’s Peter the Great going against Super Joe.

In the Arena quadrant

Third-round results:

  • 1. Chauncey Billups (69.30%) d. 5. David Thompson (30.70%)
  • 2. Alex English (58.73%) d. 3. Jack Dempsey (41.27%)
    Dempsey was the last remaining combat athlete in the tournament.

Fourth-round preview:

  • 1. Chauncey Billups vs. 2. Alex English
    It’s a match between Denver royalty. The King of Park Hill goes against the player who scored more points than any player in Nuggets history.
