Every NBA player weighs heavy decisions when they have to pick which team they want to play for in free agency: Is the money right? Is the team good? Would I like playing for that coach?
Former University of Colorado star Spencer Dinwiddie says he wants to let the fans make that decision for him.
Saying he’s trying to have a little fun during quarantine, the Nets guard put up a page Friday, pledging to let the fans vote for his next team if he hits the lofty goal of $24,632,600.
Will he get there? Well, as of Saturday morning, he had raised just $826.
“If we do not hit the target goal then I will be donating 100% of this campaign to charity,” Dinwiddie wrote on the GoFundMe page. “Fan engagement comes in all shapes and sizes, let’s have fun folks!
In a statement to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Dinwiddie said “shoe endorsers influence team decisions all the time. My/our biggest endorsers will always be the fans, so I want to have some fun while we’re all under quarantine. I hope no owners/team, personnel participate so there’s not impropriety on this one of a kind endorsement deal.”
Dinwiddie played two years for the Buffs, averaging 15 points per game, before being selected 38th overall by the Detroit Pistons in 2014.
The 6-foot-6 guard was enjoying a career year this season for Brooklyn, scoring 20.6 points with nearly 7 assists a night, before the NBA season was suspended in the wake of the global pandemic.
