BILLINGS, Mont. — Authorities have identified a 19-year-old man killed during his attempted apprehension in Montana on a warrant for deliberate homicide in Colorado.

Yellowstone County Assistant Coroner Richard Hoffman told The Billings Gazette that Kellen Fortune died of multiple gunshot wounds. He was killed after exchanging gunfire with federal agents attempting to take him into custody in Billings on Thursday evening.

Authorities have said six agents from a U.S. Marshals Service task force that pursues violent offenders were involved in the shooting in a residential neighborhood.

Billings police are investigating Fortune’s death. In accordance with Montana law, a coroner’s inquest will be conducted to determine if the killing was justified or if criminal charges should be brought.
