A man has been found guilty by a Jefferson County jury of a stabbing death at a Lakewood motel.

Jesus Osvaldo Bernal, 37, was convicted Monday in the death of 43-year-old Brigido Badua, according to the district attorney’s office. Bernal was convicted of second-degree murder and possession of drug paraphernalia following a six-day trial.

On May 30, 2019, Bernal stabbed Badua at the Trail’s End Motel, 9025 W. Colfax Ave., according to a news release.

Bernal, who has six prior felony convictions, faces a habitual criminal status hearing at his sentencing on Nov. 3. If Bernal is deemed a habitual criminal by the court, he faces up to a 96 years in prison.
