A wildfire in Colorado Springs forced 235 home evacuations Thursday in the Bear Creek Park area.

Multiple fire crews, engines, two helicopters and two airplanes fought the large grassfire, named the Bear Creek fire,  and areas under evacuation include along Bear Creek Drive and Gold Camp Road, according to the fire department.

All homes west of Vista Grande Drive, and on Nebula Court, have also been ordered evacuated.

At about 2 p.m. the fire was about 10 acres. It burned close to several homes before firefighters stopped the flames. Local, state and federal agencies, including a firefighting crew from Fort Carson, helped in the effort, said Chief Ted Collas, at a 2 p.m. news conference.

People are asked to avoid the area as firefighters work on putting out the fire, which has produced a large column of brown smoke. Structures are threatened, no injuries have been reported.

A helicopter was used Thursday to make water drops on the fire. Firefighters asked homeowners in the area to not turn on the their sprinklers systems, as that was impacting water pressure to area hydrants used by firefighters.
