Unmasked lawmakers
Re: “Maskless lawmakers chided,” Dec. 1 news story
In this front-page story, I was struck by the attitudes of some of our legislators. They have been called to a special session because of a pandemic that has killed more than 3,100 fellow Coloradans and sickened more than 239,000 more. Hopefully, the legislature can find relief for the businesses being impacted by the pandemic.
Sadly, hope fades as you read the article and learn that Rep. Matt Soper said last month, “Generally the feeling is, if you wear a mask, you’re a (Gov. Jared) Polis supporter. If you don’t wear a mask, you’re a true patriot. And itap not so much about wearing masks. Itap about being told that you have to wear a mask.”
It is exactly that petulant attitude that is fueling the latest surge in the pandemic. Not doing something that science proves works because someone told you to do it. And these are our leaders?
For the record, Soper was a mask wearer to the session on Monday. We can thank him for that.

Quite obviously, the debate and divide over mask usage is not going away. Understandably, there are various legitimate reasons for not following health guidelines and going maskless in public settings. Arguably, this may not be a choice for those that don’t.
But for me, new insight was grasped when I saw the quote attributed to Rep. Soper. He defined the mask or maskless choices made at the Capitol as being between those that supported the governor and those that were “a true patriot” (who don’t like being told what to do).
This clarity now helps me to understand why some people choose to: not wear seat belts, run stop signs, speed, not wash their hands after using the bathroom and don’t pick up after their pets. Those that practice this cooperative chaos are truly patriots!

Vindication for Flynn
Re: Dec. 2 political cartoon
I was distressed to see the political cartoon published today in The Denver Post. It makes fun of General Flynn’s pardon. I say itap about time Flynn was vindicated. The cartoon states, “betrayal, foreign agent, Putin pal, received foreign money.”
There is absolutely no (nada) evidence that these statements are anywhere near the truth. This is absolutely irresponsible to say so even in a political cartoon. Flynn was targeted and his reputation was damaged.
As far as lying to the FBI, Flynn was set up and trapped (and told he didn’t need an attorney) because he was a Trump appointee. It was part of the plan toward President Donald Trump’s impeachment from the time he was inaugurated.
The left destroyed the lives of many people who were close to Trump or appointed by him without considering the truth. Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing, which was a travesty, comes to mind.
