A 37-year-old man convicted of murder in the stabbing death of a man at a Lakewood motel has been sentenced to 96 years in prison.

Jesus Osvaldo Bernal was sentenced Dec. 17 after being declared a habitual criminal. He had six prior felony convictions, the Jefferson County District Attorney’s office said.

A jury convicted Bernal of second-degree murder in the death of 43-year-old Brigido Badua.

Bernal and Badua met just five days before the stabbing when they were released from the Adams County jail at the same time in May 2019. Badua and his wife were staying at the Trails End Motel, 9025 W. Colfax Ave.

Bernal testified that he went to Bernal’s room and after a short conversation, stabbed Badua with a large hunting knife.

Bernal was also convicted Aug. 31 of possession of drug paraphernalia.
