A second victim in a Saturday crash in which a Denver firetruck T-boned a car has died, Denver police confirmed Thursday.
The victim, 53-year-old Debra Williams, died at the hospital, said a Thursday Denver Office of the Medical Examiner news release. The crash happened at the intersection of East Speer Boulevard and North Broadway, killing the driver of the sedan, 38-year-old Monica Charles, and leaving another person critically injured.
An investigation revealed Williams died from blunt force injuries, the OEM news release said.
The fire crew was responding to an emergency call about smoke in a building and had their emergency lights and sirens on when the firetruck struck the driver’s side of a small two-door sedan with three people inside, Capt. Greg Pixley said. The sedan was traveling south on North Broadway, and the firetruck was headed northwest on Speer.
After the collision, the firefighters immediately “recognized the severity” of the crash and began working to free victims from the sedan and provide care, said Denver Fire Chief Desmond Fulton.
Fulton promised transparency into the crash investigation. Investigators are looking into whether the firetruck’s system for changing traffic lights was working and whether the light at the intersection had changed to green as the fire crew approached.
Denver police, who are conducting the investigation, had no additional information available as of Thursday morning.
