The Colorado high school wrestling state tournaments take place Thursday through Saturday at the Southwest Motors Events Center in Pueblo. (10:00) Calling it a night. Pagosa Springs walked away with the 3A title. We’ll be back here again Saturday.
(7:17) Falcons soar. Centauri locked up its first Class 2A state wrestling championship after Eyan Chavez scored a sudden victory over previously undefeated Clint Brown from Peyton in the third period. The Falcons held off a late surge from Cedaredge, which finished team runners-up with 99 points. Wray went down fighting, taking third with 94 points, as Tyler Collins, the older brother of sophomore Brady, defeated Centauri’s Jordan Martin in a 7-1 decision.
(6:15) There will be a new 2A champion. Wray’s comeback for 2A’s fourth straight state championship is all but done. That opened the door for Cedaredge to stage a comeback and get right back in the thick of the title chase. Three Wray Eagles finished runners up in their respective championship matches, including a potential four-time state champion in Brady Collins. Collins lost by sudden victory to Lane Hunsberger from Cedaredge.
(5:15 p.m.) Title time. The Class 2A state finals are about to start. Nine wrestlers are undefeated. Wray is looking to stage a comeback to take home a fourth consecutive team title.
(3:35 p.m.) Three-peat bid denied. The first major upset for Class 3A took place at 126 pounds when Jefferson’s Angelo Lozado — a two-time defending state champion — was defeated in the semifinals by Florence’s Brandon Boehm in a dramatic 8-7 decision. Boehm held off a Lozado escape attempt in the final seconds for the win.
(2:50 p.m.) 3A semifinals underway. The domination started early for Class 3A wrestlers. Two undefeated freshmen punched their tickets to the championship round with perfect records: Mullen’s 106-pound Dale O’Blia (16-0) and Gunnison’s 113-pound Royce Uhrig (25-0).
(2:45 p.m.) Nine undefeated wrestlers left in 2A. In a season like no other, we will have championship bouts like no other. Nine undefeated wrestlers will compete for a state championship in 2A. While Wray has four wrestlers vying for a title, the Eagles’ quest for a fourth consecutive 2A state championship is in jeopardy. Centauri sits in first with 92 points, Cedaredge and Wray each are tied with 84, Buena Vista is in fourth with 81.5 and John Mall rounds out the top-five with 59. The quest for a back-to-back champion, and four-timer status is still in contention for one Wray wrestler, as Brady Collins (24-1) scored a 4-1 victory over Eddie Bowman from John Mall. He is the lone Class of 2023 wrestler who still has a shot at being a four-time champion.
Other highlights — 126: Two undefeated seniors are going for the state crown, with Dale VanMatre (25-0) of John Mall set to face Trey Geyer from Cedaredge (21-0).
132: Rye’s Michael Atencio (14-0) will face Oran Huff (20-1) from Lyons. Atencio is the reigning 120-pound champion, and Huff won 126s.
138: There was a huge upset in the afternoon, as previously undefeated sophomore Lain Yapoujian (24-1) from Byers, last year’s 132-pound champion, lost in a sudden victory against Zach Tittle from Highland.
195: Adam Schulz (16-1) of Crowley County will square off against Colby Clatterbaugh (24-0) from Meeker after he scored an 8-4 win.
(12:25 p.m.) 2A quarterfinal recap. A total of 15 wrestlers entered the 2A quarterfinals with perfect records. The 138-pound bracket is proving to be among the toughest all weekend, with Anthony Aldretti, a senior from John Mall, and sophomore Lain Yapoujian both undefeated. Aldretti won the 2020 152-pound title while Yapoujian moved up one weight class after claiming a 132-pound title. The other intriguing weight class is 195, with two reigning champions and a runner-up. Fabian Lopez of Sedgwick/Fleming remained undefeated at 23-0, and won the title in the same weight class last year. Adam Schulz of Crowley County (21-0) won at 170 last year, while Colby Clatterbaugh (15-1), a senior from Meeker, took runner up at 182s.
(11:40 a.m.) And then there were four. The quarterfinals are finished and we’re down to the semifinals in both 2A and 3A. If you’re looking for a highlight from the early session, how about Burlington’s Isaac Mantey pinning his opponent in 21 seconds in the 2A 220 quarterfinals. One other interesting note: There ended up being four byes in Thursday’s quarterfinals. There was one in the girls tournament.
(9:08 a.m.) Back at it. A day after the girls made history at the Southwest Motors Events Center, it’s time for the boys to take over. Class 2A and 3A will wrestle three rounds for state titles today. In 2A, sophomores Lain Yapoujian (Byers) and Brady Collins (Wray) are both going for their second straight titles, while in 3A, Angelo Lozado (Jefferson) and Brady Hankin (Woodland Park) are both juniors going for their third straight state crowns.
