The Colorado high school wrestling state tournaments take place Thursday through Saturday at the Southwest Motors Events Center in Pueblo. (7:40 p.m.) Pomona back on top. It’s hard to keep the Panthers down. Cheyenne Mountain’s bid to unseat Pomona at the top of Class 5A appears to have slipped away after a series of losses in the finals. Pomona is now 20 points ahead with just a small handful of matches to go. It appears the Panthers will win their third straight state championship and fifth in the last six years.
(6:09 p.m.) Cheyenne Mountain claims first title. Cheyenne Mountain (123.5) held off Pueblo County (102) to claim its first-ever state wrestling championship, with big fellas Nico Gagliardi (195 pounds) and Jake Boley (200) leading the way with championship round pins.
(4:35 p.m.) 4A title matches underway. The 4A championship round has begun, with Cheyenne Mountain (111.5) holding a comfortable lead over Pueblo County (90) in the team standings. If it can hold on, this would be Cheyenne Mountain’s first team wrestling title.
(3:20 p.m.) Ponderosa and Pomona neck and neck. The Class 5A semifinals are in the books, and only 13 points separate Ponderosa (139) and Pomona (126) in the team standings. The Mustangs will have seven wrestlers in the 5A finals, while the Panthers have three. Also of note: Columbine’s two big fellas — defending champions Jack Forbes at 195 and Zach Schraeder at 285 — have moved on to the finals. Although, things didn’t come east for Schraeder, who was taken to the wire by Legend’s Luke Sandy before scoring a 3-1 sudden victory.
(2:50 p.m.) A new champion coming in 5A? Don’t look now, but Ponderosa is staring down a potential Class 5A team title. Pomona has was the last two 5A titles and four of the past five, but the Mustangs were on top of the team standings midway through the semifinal round. The last time Ponderosa claimed a team state championship: 2010.
(1:43 p.m.) Returning champs stay alive. Five wrestlers from Class 4A that are defending individual state titles all advanced to finals matches on Saturday: Weston Dalton (Pueblo East-132), Isaias Estrada (Thomas Jefferson-160), Kobi Johnson (Loveland-113), Rudy Lopez (Eerie-138) and Vance Vombaur (Windsor-145).
(9:01 a.m.) And away we go… The third and final day of state wrestling is off and running in Pueblo. With a massive snowstorm bearing down on the rest of the Front Range, CHSAA has moved up its schedule ever so slightly with the championship rounds of Class 4A and 5A now set to begin at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively.
