A small earthquake struck in the mountains about 10 miles northeast of Aspen Saturday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The 2.8 magnitude quake was recorded at about 9:02 p.m. Saturday and happened about 2 miles underground, according to the agency.
Nineteen people in Aspen reported to the USGS that they felt the earthquake, and one person in Basalt, said Don Blakeman, a geophysicist at the agency’s National Earthquake Information Center in Golden.
“Basically a quake that size, it won’t ever cause any damage,” he said. “As far as being felt, itap typically like a sharp jolt that lasts only a second or two. When you get into big quakes, magnitude six or seven, those can last for minutes. A small quake like this is going to be more of a bump.”
Itap common for the Western Slope to experience minor earthquakes, he added.
