Newly elected Denver Public School board member Tay Anderson, center, speaks to the board and the audience at the DPS headquarters at 1860 Lincoln street on Dec. 4, 2019 in Denver. Putting a hat on backwards Anderson said “Last night, somebody was like, ‘Oh, we have a school board member that wears his hat backwards. He’s a thug’. Let me just show you that this school board member looks like his district.” Anderson became Colorado’s youngest black elected official. Three new Denver school board members were sworn in during the ceremony. This is significant because it represents a “flip” of the board majority. Five of the seven board members are now backed by the teachers union. The two other board members are Scott Baldermann, and Brad Laurvick, (District 5).

Tay Anderson says he will step away from his Denver school board duties until the completion of an independent investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct against him.

However, Anderson will continue to vote on key matters, including the hiring of the next superintendent at the board’s June 3 meeting, according to a statement from the Denver school board.

The board statement raises questions about what it means for Anderson to step away.

“These unsubstantiated false allegations have caused a great deal of trauma to our entire district, and our students deserve better,” Anderson on Sunday. “These false claims have put my family and I in harm’s way, and now as a father and son, I must protect those I love first, therefore I will be stepping back from everyday board functions until the completion of the independent investigation.”
