Grand Junction police officers shot and killed a man Friday morning near St. Mary’s Medical Center, according to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office.

Police arrived at the Advanced Medicine Pavilion, at 750 Wellington Ave., at 9:50 a.m. after a report that a man entered the building with a gun. The man pointed the firearm at employees, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

Officers with the Grand Junction Police Department responded to the call, which led to the shooting. The man was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to the release.

Nether the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office nor the Grand Junction Police Department have identified the officers involved in the shooting or more information about the man who died. Officers, employees and patients were uninjured in the shooting.

The investigation will be handed over to a Critical Incident Response Team, said Grand Junction Police Department spokeswoman Callie Berkson.

Critical Incident Response teams investigate when an officer fires their weapon and injures or kills someone. The officers involved will also be placed on administrative leave, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Pavilion will be closed for rest of the day and on Saturday. It is expected that the Pavilion will reopen on Monday, said Sherri Hughes-Smith, spokeswoman for SCL Health, which owns the hospital and Pavilion.
