More than 450 flights were delayed and 48 flights canceled at Denver International Airport by late-afternoon Saturday, with possible severe thunderstorms looming in the afternoon and evening weather forecast.

The July Fourth weekend is an extremely busy travel period and the airport expects about 2.5 million travelers to pass through by Tuesday.

Of the 48 flight cancellations, SkyWest Airlines had 21 and Southwest Airlines had 18, . Southwest had the most delays, 151, or 38% of its Denver flights. United Airlines had 98 delays, or 24% of its DIA traffic, with one cancellation.

On Friday, Southwest canceled at least 75 flights in and out of DIA. The airline said in a statement that stormy summer weather across the country was contributing to its difficulties.

Thunderstorms, with heavy rain and the threat of local flooding, once again cloud the afternoon and evening forecast for the Front Range and Denver-metro area.
