Melphy was named to Team USA on July 8 after a back injury forced fellow Denverite Ben Pinkelman to withdraw from competition. The 5-foot-10, 196-pound halfback and hooker was also a standout soccer player at Heritage High School and played collegiately at Metro State. He began playing rugby as a senior in high school and was part of the U.S. rugby sevens squad that took home the bronze medal at the 2019 Pan American Games.
