In 2015, investigative reporter David Migoya was part of a three-person Denver Post team that uncovered the inner details of how the new U.S.  Department of Veterans Affairs medical complex in Aurora had inexplicably grown from a $600 million project into a $1.6 billion financial fiasco.

Congressional hearings were held as a result of the cost overruns, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers took over all future VA construction projects of note and several VA officials retired in embarrassment.

After the Aurora facility opened in July 2018, Migoya kept in touch with several sources. Through them, he learned that the cost of the facility had continued to grow as cut projects were restored and construction errors fixed.

Migoya used those insider details and records he obtained from the VA to show how problems have continued to plague the medical complex, making it one of the most expensive in the world.

The work of an investigative reporter can take weeks or months to complete, and often requires records requests or even the help of a lawyer. We invest in that work because it is core to our mission as a news organization. When you support The Denver Post with your subscription, this is the work we get to do.

David and I both thank you.
