A record number of fans showed up to see the CHSAA Class 5A and 4A state football championship games on Saturday at Empower Field at Mile High.
The announced attendance for this year’s “Championship Saturday” games was 16,152. The Colorado Sports Hall of Fame, which sponsors the event, said “more than 16,000″ attended. Cherry Creek beat Valor Christian, 21-0, to claim its third consecutive Class 5A title, and Chatfield won, 41-34, over Erie for the 4A crown.
“It is gratifying to all involved to be part of something which benefits high school football, youth sports organizations and Colorado’s prep students and fans to this high level,” CSHOF president and CEO Tom Lawrence said in a release.
This was the 16th year in which the state’s big school title games took place at the Broncos’ stadium. CHSAA, however, is considering an option to have one single site host the finals of all seven state classifications. The CSHOF has offered CHSAA a new contract to keep state title games at Mile High through 2024, but a new deal has not been reached.
In the news release, Lawrence said the CSHOF and the Broncos “certainly look forward to continuing this event through 2022 and hopefully for many more years.”
