A vehicle-theft suspect who police say had a large knife is dead after he was shot at by two Arvada officers early Wednesday morning.
At about 1:15 a.m., officers responded to the 5500 block of Newland Way on a report of suspicious activity in the area, police said in a news release. Two men were near a Ford F-350 pickup truck, and when officers arrived one man fled on foot. The truck had been reported stolen several days ago.
Officers chased the man who ran and confronted him. The suspect, identified as Kenneth Delton Hutcheson, 37, brandished a knife and refused officers’ orders to drop the weapon, the release said.
“Two officers fired at the suspect, and he was pronounced dead at the scene,” police said.
No Arvada officers were injured in the incident.
Two APD officers have been put on administrative leave per department policy. They were not named Wednesday.
The Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the case.
