Amazon is closing all of its brick-and-mortar bookstores across the country, including its stores in Colorado.
The Seattle-based company said Wednesday that the move will affect 66 stores in the U.S. and two in the United Kingdom, .
In the metro area, Amazon has bookstores in Cherry Creek, Park Meadows and FlatIron Crossing.
The Cherry Creek store, 2787 E. 2nd Ave., opened in March of 2019 with much anticipation and fanfare. At the time, the 4,500-square-foot store stocked a selection of 3,000 books as well as an array of Amazon devices, games, toys and other merchandise.
An employee at the Cherry Creek store on Thursday declined comment and referred questions to Amazon public relations.
“We remain committed to building great, long-term physical retail experiences and technologies and we’re working closely with our affected employees to help them find new roles within Amazon,” the company said in a statement.
Amazon opened its first brick-and-mortar bookstore in 2015, in Seattle, two decades after it began selling books online. The company is also closing its 4-star shops and pop-up locations.
