A rideshare driver who witnessed an assault and then helped Denver police identify a suspect in the case was recognized Tuesday with a Daniels Fund award.
On Sept. 28, 2019, Ariel Bogue had just dropped off a passenger in the 3000 block of Brighton Boulevard when he witnessed the passenger being assaulted, according to a police news release. The assault victim fell to the ground, striking his head on the pavement and losing consciousness.
Bogue remained at the scene with the victim and called 911, police said. When officers arrived Bogue provided a description of the suspect, who had fled, and he later positively identified the suspect, who was recorded on surveillance video.
Police said Bogue’s actions potentially saved the life of the assault victim. At a ceremony Tuesday, Bogue was humble about the help he provided.
“Thank you for this award, I didn’t expect anything in return, I was just doing the right thing,” Bogue said. “I would hope someone would do the same for me.”
After the 31-year-old suspect was identified and arrested, he later pleaded guilty to second- and third-degree assault.
The victim suffered a life-threatening head injury, including a brain bleed, which required doctors to remove a portion of his skull in order to alleviate the pressure, the news release said. Doctors and nurses who treated the man told investigators he likely would not have survived he had been left lying in the street for an extended time.
“Mr. Bogue was attentive to his surroundings, and most importantly ensured the victim received prompt emergency medical care — actions that are certainly heroic and worthy of this award,” said Denver Police Chief Paul Pazen.
The Daniels Fund recognized Bogue with the Bill Daniels Neighborhood Hero Award and presented him with a $1,000 check.
“Ariel Bogue exemplifies what is great about our community, caring consideration for his neighbors and a willingness to help someone in need,” said Hanna Skandera, president of the Daniels Fund. “Without his heroic actions, this situation may have resulted in a tragic outcome.”
