A man who was shot dead in Lower Downtown early Saturday morning was an East High School graduate who had attended American University.

Nicholas “Nick” Caldwell, 21, was shot at about 2 a.m. Saturday in the area of 20th and Larimer streets, police said. The Denver Office of the Medical Examiner released his identity on Thursday.

Caldwell returned to Denver about a year ago, deciding to take a break from his studies to be with his family, .

“Nick was a giver. He cared for the people in his life immensely,” Ajala Way, a close friend, wrote on GoFundMe. “Nick was persistent, loving, and insightful. We all looked up to Nick and will continue to do so as he makes his heavenly transition.”

The GFM account asks for contributions to help his family with funeral and other expenses. The fundraising effort has a goal of $20,000. As of Thursday afternoon, almost 100 people had donated over $5,000.

Police on Thursday said that there’s no new information to release in the case. Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867 (STOP).
