A subway shooting in New York City on Tuesday morning, in which 10 people were shot, has prompted security concerns in Denver where patrols will be increased in public transit areas.
“The Denver Police Department is aware of the event that occurred in New York City and will remain in contact with our local, state and federal law enforcement partners to assess any potential safety concerns,” Denver police said in a statement on Tuesday afternoon. “DPD will remain vigilant and increase patrols in public transit areas, and as always, DPD encourages everyone to be aware of their surroundings and to report to police any suspicious or illegal activity. They can text or call 911 in Denver.”
A gunman in a gas mask and a construction vest set off a smoke canister on a rush-hour subway train in Brooklyn and opened fire, authorities said. New York police were scouring the city for the shooter and a rental truck.
Five people were in critical condition but are expected to survive, according to the Associated Presse. At least 17 in all were injured in some way in the attack as the train pulled into a Sunset Park neighborhood station, which is about a 15-minute train ride into Manhattan.
The Regional Transportation District on Tuesday sent information about the NYC shooting “to everyone who provides policing and security for RTD, and that we have told them to be on high alert,” the agency said in a statement.
RTD riders can use the Transit Watch app — rtd-denver.com — to if they see anything suspicious. Riders can call, text or email information around the clock.
