A person and a police dog are dead after law enforcement and a suspect exchanged fire in Manitou Springs Monday night, the Colorado Springs Police Department says.
According to CSPD, Manitou Springs Police Department officers and deputies from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office responded to a menacing report inside a business in the 900 block of Manitou Avenue.
CSPD said when officials contacted the person, the suspect fired at least one round at law enforcement. At least one Manitou Springs police officer and at least one El Paso County deputy shot back, striking the person who died on the scene.
No human officers or deputies were injured, but an El Paso County Sheriff’s K9 was shot and killed.
The involved law enforcement officials are on administrative leave during the investigation.
Authorities have not released the name of the person who was killed.
