Several street closures will be in effect in the vicinity of the Cherry Creek shopping district for Sunday’s Cherry Creek Sneak.

The 10-mile race — the last Cherry Creek Sneak, due to a steady decline in participation — starts at 8 a.m., followed by a 5-mile at 8:30 a.m. and a 5K at 9 a.m.

The event used to be an institution on the Denver road racing scene, starting in 1982 with a 5-mile race, and it attracted a peak of 17,000 runners in 1998, according to race director Pat Downing. The 10-miler and 5K were added in recent years.

The event was not held the past two seasons because of the pandemic. It attracted about 3,400 when it was last run in 2019, down from 4,200 two years earlier. Downing declined to project numbers for this year’s event but said registration this year has been about 40% lower than in 2019.
