It certainly isn’t worthy of the “Orange Crush” or the “The Steel Curtain” moniker.
And while it might be too much to label the Rockies’ defense as “Doomsday,” their glovework has been less than stellar.
Case in point, in the sixth inning Sunday, the Mets’ Brandon Nimmo hit a routine single to right field, but Randal Grichuk had the ball go between his legs and Nimmo took third on the two-base error. Grichuk’s error opened the door to the Mets’ 2-0 victory.
The Rockies’ 32 errors are tied for the third-most in the majors.
“We’ve got to keep working and we’ve got to get better,” manager Bud Black said afterward. “We got to get better through practice. That error came back to haunt us, for sure.”
On the road, again. After a 3-6 homestand, the Rockies travel to Pittsburgh for three games, beginning Monday, then move on for four games with the Nationals in Washington D.C.
The Rockies were 4-2 against the Pirates last season, but just 1-2 at PNC Park. They were 4-2 against the Nationals, going 2-1 in D.C.
Shortstop of future. Ezequiel Tovar continues to rake for Double-A Hartford. He hit two home runs Saturday night and now has eight homers this season. He is 9-for-12 with three doubles and two home runs through his last five games and is hitting .313 with a .953 OPS.
Footnotes. Lefty reliever Lucas Gilbreath, a Legacy High School graduate, extended his scoreless streak to 4 2/3 innings Sunday. Through his last five appearances, he’s allowed just one hit, walked two and struck out five. … Right-hander Tyler Kinley pitched another scoreless inning and lowered his ERA to 0.59 through 17 games. … Outfielder Yonathan Daza went 0-for-3, snapping his career-best hitting streak at 13 games.
