Kuhl is coming off one of the finest pitching performances in Rockies history. On Monday, he dominated the Dodgers with a three-hit shutout at Coors Field, becoming the first Rockies pitcher to throw a complete-game shutout against the Dodgers in Denver. He was the third Rockies pitcher to toss a shutout with three or fewer hits allowed. Kuhl didn’t factor into the Rockies’ 4-1 loss to the Diamondback at Chase Field on May 6, even though he allowed just one run on three hits over six innings. At Coors Field this season, he’s 3-2 with a 2.48 ERA, 23 strikeouts, and just six walks.
Gallen got roughed up by the Padres in his last start, allowing six runs in five innings. He did not factor in the decision. In eight career starters against Colorado, he’s 3-1 with a 2.11 ERA and 57 strikeouts. He’s made three starts at Coors Field, going 0-0 with a 2.00 ERA. He’s struck out 19, walked only two and given up one homer at Coors.
Trending: After batting .078 in April, second baseman Brendan Rodgers had slashed .308/.350/.507 heading into Saturday night’s game. He was tied for fifth in the National League in hits (65) and doubles (17) over that span.
At issue: The Rockies entered Saturday’s game having stolen 14 bases, the second-fewest in the majors by a team. Only Minnesota (13) has swiped fewer bases. The Rockies are on pace to steal 29 bags, which would be, by far, their fewest for a full season. The 2004 club swiped just 44 bases.
