Amid record heatwaves across the globe, fueling devastating wildfires and drought, some are concerned that people are underscoring the importance of cheap gas more than they are efforts to conserve natural resources, like water.
“These are interesting times,” said Becky English, chair of the Colorado Sierra Club transportation committee. “High gas prices are forcing us to recognize fossil fuels as the very high-density non-renewable resources they are.”
English thinks that the world should be conserving fossil fuels for future use for “those limited applications when renewable resources are not suitable.”
English thinks there may be a silver lining to the steep prices at the pump.
“It’s not so bad that high gas prices are causing the driving public to be more thoughtful about the vehicle miles they travel,” English said. “I hope that more and more, people will downshift from driving gas cars to using transit, bikes, electric vehicles and walking. Of course, this would be easier if our land use policies encouraged more dense communities, rather than sprawl.”
