Colorado State House District 56 candidate Q&A

The race features Republican Rod Bockenfeld, Democrat Kathleen Conway and Libertarian Amy Lunde

PUBLISHED: | UPDATED:
Getting your player ready...

What are your top three priorities for the next legislative session?
Affordability, crime reduction and educational choice

The chamber may see split Democrat-Republican control next year. On what issues do you see common ground with the opposite party?
If the current Governor is in office, none unless approved by him.

What perspective or background would you bring to the chamber that is currently missing?
Fiscal responsibility.

What more can the state legislature do to ease housing costs across Colorado?
Unwind the bad policies and regulations that have been put in place over the past four years. These policies have increased risk on private landlords who previously kept rents below market when they had respectful, good paying and established tenants. Let the free market build affordable housing without government interference. Incentives should be geared toward reducing developer cost not subsidizing affordability.

Do you support the current law on fentanyl possession and resources for treatment?
No. Any possession of fentanyl should be a felony. The current Governor, State Attorney General, and Democratic Legislators created a drug dealer work around when it comes to fentanyl. Fentanyl equal to 3 grains of salt is sufficient enough to kill someone. The current law allows up to .5 grams before it becomes a felony. The current law is wholly inadequate. Treatment alternatives should be negotiated with our elected district attorneys with performance measures incorporated into any case settlements.

Climate
K-12 support

The chamber may see split Democrat-Republican control next year. On what issues do you see common ground with the opposite party?
I think there are individuals in the opposite party that want to do the right thing and are working for the people and not for self enrichment. Finding those people will be my challenge. Having worked successfully with members of various parties in county government I know this can be done.

What perspective or background would you bring to the chamber that is currently missing?
As a single mom, small business owner, and homeowner I can bring a common sense approach to these subjects.

What more can the state legislature do to ease housing costs across Colorado?
More and more private homes are being purchased by corporations that are not reselling them to private owners. As they control rent prices it may be time to start discussing rent controls.

Do you support the current law on fentanyl possession and resources for treatment?
Yes. An unbelievable number of people have died from this. Education, treatment, and strong penalties for the sale of these poisons especially to children.

How candidate order was determined: A lot drawing was held at the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office on Aug. 3 to determine the general election ballot order for major and minor party candidates. Colorado law (1-5-404, C.R.S.) requires that candidates are ordered on the ballot in three tiers: major party candidates followed by minor party candidates followed by unaffiliated candidates. Within each tier, the candidates are ordered by a lot drawing with the exception of the office of Governor and Lt. Governor, which are ordered by the last name of the gubernatorial candidate.

Questionnaires were not sent to write-in candidates.
