Thornton Police Department said a shooting occurred Tuesday while officers tried to arrest suspects following an armed robbery and chase.

The Denver Post asked Thornton Police Department to clarify whether police shot the suspects or the suspects shot at police, but the department had not responded to calls or social media inquiries as of 5 p.m.

The armed robbery happened about 1 p.m. Tuesday at a Wells Fargo located at 120th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard, . A man and a woman walked into the bank displaying guns, police said.

The armed robbers, who police did not identify, fled in a stolen vehicle and were pursued by Thornton Police, ending in a crash at 88th Avenue and Colorado 2, where the suspects drove into oncoming traffic and hit another vehicle, police said. The driver of that vehicle suffered minor injuries, police said.

When the male suspect exited the stolen vehicle, police said in a news release that “shots were fired” and that both the man and the woman were injured. The Denver Post asked who fired the shots, but Thornton Police did not immediately respond.

The male suspect tried to flee on foot, police said, and attempted to carjack a vehicle, police said. Both suspects were then taken into custody and transported to local hospitals with injuries, police said.

Details about the suspects’ injuries or what caused them were not provided.
