Two people killed in a two-vehicle crash with an deputy who was responding to a separate crash with lights and sirens on Wednesday afternoon have been identified.
The crash happened at about 3:25 p.m. at East Broncos Parkway and South Blackhawk Street, according to the .
The 69-year-old male driver of a vehicle involved died at the scene, CSP Master Trooper Gary Cutler said. A 75-year-old female passenger in the vehicle was taken to a hospital where she died.
The driver was identified Thursday by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office as Gregory Hey, of Centennial. His passenger was Judith Stein, also of Centennial. The official cause and manner of their deaths are pending.
The deputy, a 58-year-old male who was on duty and driving a patrol vehicle, was also taken to the hospital. He was treated for “moderate” injuries and released.
The state patrol on Thursday said the deputy was responding to a service call, with lights and siren activated in an unmarked patrol car, when the crash happened.
The deputy, who was not identified Thursday, was westbound on Broncos Parkway when Hey, who was driving a Honda CRV south on Blackhawk, pulled out in front of the patrol car and was hit broadside.
Investigators are concentrating on the speed of the vehicles and the curvature of the roadway where the crash happened, the state patrol said.
The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office said the deputy was responding to a single-vehicle crash in the nearby 7000 block of South Revere Parkway. In that crash, a driver was injured when he lost control and crashed into a wall head-on. Investigators believe the driver suffered a medical condition before crashing. Details on his injuries were not released.
Meanwhile, the deputy is at home recuperating, according to the sheriff’s office. The Colorado State Patrol continues to investigate the fatal crash.
