Updates

Down to one more day (5:05 p.m.): The final events of the afternoon are wrapping up on the track as the 1,600-meter relays produced strong results. Watch out for Denver East and Cherokee Trail in that relay tomorrow.

Full results will be posted and it’s time to close up shop as another historic day of Colorado track and field is in the books.

Rathke goes for two … again (4:53 p.m.): For the second year in a row, Peak to Peak junior Kourtney Rathke set a Class 3A meet record in the girls pole vault, clearing 13 feet on Friday to win the title and best last year’s top mark (12-11) by an inch. And for the second year in a row, she claimed the 3A long jump title (18-2) as well, giving her back-to-back seasons with a state championship double. — Matt Schubert

Long time coming (2:10 p.m.): Brandon Hills wanted to test himself. The Vista Ridge senior had already beaten the Class 5A long jump field with his second jump of the afternoon. However, with the final jump of his high school career, he had a successful leap nobody in the state had seen in the last 33 years. His final jump of 24 feet, 8 inches beat out a record that had stood since 1990 held by Chris Sanders at 24′ 7½”.  He fed off the crowd and knew that his leap had potential.

“Energy plays a big factor in everything and I’m thankful for all of that (on that last jump) … Itap incredible.”

At the other end of the stadium, the officials told the 5A 800-meter relay teams to stand up on the blocks before they got into their pre-race and wait while Hills jumped.

The crowd steadily clapped with Hills leading them. Once he took off, it was eerily silent. However, it soon changed. When the official had his tape measurement reading — twice for good measure — and it was official, the crowd roared. — Brendan Ploen

Unleash the beast (1:25 p.m.): Rosie Mucharsky has a “Beast Mode” bracelet her sister and her friend made for her during cross-country season. On Friday, she exemplified it.

The Denver East sophomore pulled away on the backstretch in the Class 5A girls 800-meter race to upset the field with a winning time of 2:09.57. Emma Stutzman from Pomona was unable to make a late push and finished second in 2:11.32.

With a loaded field, she knew she had to push. “I normally have a good kick and tried to empty the tank and put it all out there,” she said.

She will run the 3,200-meter run on Saturday.

Action heats up (11:20 a.m.): After a 45-minute delay, the field events are back underway and theClass  3A long jump just wrapped up a few minutes ago.

Next up to follow will be the boys 5A long jump where Brandon Hills of Vista Ridge, a Washington State football signee, is a favorite to take back the long jump title he lost in 2022.

Elsewhere this morning, Matthew Edwards of The Classical Academy won the 3A 3,200-meter run with a time of 9 minutes, 20.88 seconds, while Sarah DeLaCerda won the 3A 3,200 with a time of 11:04.13.

In the boys Class 5A 3,200, Valor Christian’s Dane Elke won with a time of 9:13.27 and edged out Benjamin Anderson of Mountain Vista (9:13.48). Emma Stutzman of Pomona won the girls 5A 3,200 with a time of 10:12.68. — Brendan Ploen

Vines leaps to victory (11:10 a.m.): As expected, DeBeque junior Sam Vines, the state’s top high jumper this spring regardless of classification, cruised to victory in the 1A event on Friday morning. And, as expected, he did so in record-setting fashion with a state meet record leap of 6 feet, 10 inches. While it didn’t quite meet his season PR of 7 feet, it was enough to top the next closest competitor by nine inches. — Matt Schubert

Back at it (8:15 a.m.): After a sunny, rainy, sunny, then rainy again first day of state track and field, we’ve back at Jeffco Stadium for more of the same. There’s all sorts of storylines hanging out there today, including Vista Ridge’s Brandon Hills going for his second Class 5A boys long jump title, Mountain Vista’s Tyler Downs locking horns with Fort Collins’ Christian Groendyk in the 5A boys 3200, and a loaded 5A girls 3200 field that includes Pomona’s Emma Stutzman (Northern Arizona), Valor’s Brooke Wilson (Wake Forest), Arapahoe’s Ava Mitchell (Northern Arizona) and Air Academy junior Bethany Michalak. Should be a fun one … as long as we can keep those lightning strikes away. — Matt Schubert
